Philip's Favourites From Portugal

01 Aug 2019

Why Portugal?

The quality of Portuguese wines continues to go from strength to strength, and I really believe they represent some of the best value wines on the market. Terra de Lobos has fast become one of my favourites, after sourcing them four years ago. Consistently good quality from what has become one of the stalwarts of the Weavers range.

Casal Branco, A Family Affair

The Casal Branco Estate can be found in the Ribatejo region in southern Portugal. Located alongside the banks of the river Tagus, this estate has remained in the same family for over 200 years and some parts of the winery date back to the 18th Century.

What really appeals to me about this estate (and Portugal as a wine producing nation as a whole) is how they look to work with the local indigenous grape varieties which have been grown for generations, rather than moving to the more commercial grapes like some countries have done.
