Widely planted in the Medoc, Bordeaux during the 18th Century, this variety is benefiting from a New World revival. At its best, it sits between Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with fruit of the former and structure of the latter. Low yielding but deep flavoured and rich garnet coloured with chocolate undertones is well worth trying.
