An interesting system is in place in Vienna that revolves around the traditional inns known as Heuringen. These sell the wines of the area, which for their first year are known as Heuringe. When the new vintage comes in to supplant them they become known as Altwein, meaning old wine, and a new generation of Heuringe is born.
Riesling and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) produce the best wines, whilst Grüner Veltliner produces the bulk. Zweigelt is the main red.
