This area produces both red and white wines and some sweet wines. It is often regarded as the production room for the mass-produced wines of Bordeaux. However, some good generic wines from the very small châteaux can be found here. The region lies between the River Garonne and the Dordogne and encompasses areas such as Cadillac and Sainte-Croix-du-Mont. Across this region the soils encompass mainly silt, sand, gravel and limestone clay.

A variety of grapes are planted here including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec for the reds, and Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle for the whites and sweet whites.
