A large appellation with 4,500 hectares under vine, and considered to fall between the Médoc AOC and the great names of Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux for quality, the Haut-Médoc can produce very fine wines at a palatable price. Recent investment in many of the châteaux has elevated the wines to the level of excellence that the gravelly soils and climatic conditions make eminently possible.
