In the true style of French wine classification, the Médoc is not as straightforward as it could be. It is both an area (encompassing Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux as well as other appellations) and an appellation in its own right (the Médoc AOC). This is because the Médoc AOC (which we are concerned with here) was once known as the Bas-Médoc, or lower Médoc, but the growers and producers thought this was derogatory and successfully fought to have the Bas removed. It is an appellation of good wine that is neighboured by greats.

Traditionally the preserve of Cabernet Sauvignon and co-operatives, the Médoc AOC has made recent efforts to improve its range and quality. Merlot, to lessen the austerity of the wine, has become more prominent and individual châteaux are producing their own wines. The results have been encouraging.
