St-Estèphe lacks the fame of its great neighbour to the south, Pauillac, but its variety of soil types, its rural feel and its prevalence of small, family-owned châteaux makes for a charming appellation with many fine wines to its credit. Château Cos d'Estournel and Château Montrose, the former with its distinctive Asian-influenced architecture, are famous Deuxièmes Cru vineyards and many other producers in St-Estèphe rival them for excellence.
The Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated wines of St-Estèphe are renowned for an austerity that traditionally required the patience of ageing to tame them, but recent experimentation with Merlot has made them softer and more approachable. At their best they are firm, weighty and ripe.
