Chambolle-Musigny lacks the layer of marl in the limestone that gives the other great wines of the Côte de Nuits their power, but it makes up for this to such an extent that two of the greatest grand crus to be found in the Côte d'Or are here. They are Bonnes Mares and Musigny and both are eagerly sought after. The premier crus are also well regarded but, on the other hand, the village wines are less highly prized than others around them.
In the absence of power, the best red wines of Chambolle-Musigny are elegant, delicate and aromatic instead. A small amount of white is produced from Chardonnay.
