Vougeot

Vougeot

Vougeot may only have one grand cru vineyard, the Clos de Vougeot, but it is truly immense by the standards of Burgundy. Around 80 owners grow grapes within the walls of this 50ha of land and so what may seem a simple appellation becomes virtually meaningless. The variations in soil type, not to mention the skill and ambition of the growers and winemakers, are immense and so Clos de Vougeot can be brilliant, ordinary or anything in between. The name of the producer is the only key to quality. Premier Crus and village wines are also produced outside the Clos de Vougeot.

The Clos de Vougeot is entirely Pinot Noir and, though quality is excruciatingly variable, the best wines are rich, powerful and capable of a very long life. Chardonnay is grown in the premier cru Clos Blanc vineyard.
