Located at the southern end of the Mâconnais, where Chardonnay thrives on limestone slopes such as the famous Solutré, Pouilly-Fuissé comprises five villages that consistently produce the finest wines of the district. Co-operatives, négociants and individual winemakers all play an important role here and have helped establish the reputation of the appellation, a reputation that is reflected in the price they demand. There are no bargains to be had with Pouilly-Fuissé on the label, but the top producers do justify the outlay.

The wines are all white in Pouilly-Fuissé, though the styles to be found are not so straightforward. Old vines and oak are regarded as key in the production of great wines. When both are present, and treated with finesse, the wines can be a sumptuous rival to the great white burgundies.
