Nebiollo is Piedmont and arguably Italy's nobelest grape variety and is only made in commercially significant quantities in the world famous Barolo and Barberesco areas. These wines tend to be robust, complex, and highly balanced, opaque in colour and improve wonderfully when bottle aged. Lengthy decanting is also advised.
Barbera
The workhorse red variety of the region in Barbera which is planted widely around the towns of Asti and Alba. These wines are robust and warming and have improved greatly since the 1980's when they were known for being palatable but overly acidic. Modern wine making techniques and aging in new oak barrels has seen quality improve significantly.
Cortese
The most significant still white wine made in Piedmont is Gavi. This is made from the Cortese grape and usually results in a firm structure, racy acidity, green fruit flavours, and an aromatic minerality.
Moscato
Piedmont also produces a world famous sparkling wine known as Moscato D'Asti. this tends to be off dry, low in alcohol, lightly fizzy and show aromas of lychee and elderflower. A perfect apperetif.
