Porto is the heart of the Port industry. Most of the Port Houses are situated on the estuary of the Douro River in Vila Nova de Gaia, opposite the city of Porto.
Porto gave its name to Portugal's most famous export, Port. In this arid region the vineyards are planted on mainly granite-based soils. Here the vines' roots have to grow deep into the soil to search for water and other nutrients. In recent years, many of the vineyards have been replanted to allow for an increase in mechanisation.
