Vinho Verde is perhaps Portugal's most famous wine-producing region, accounting for some 20 per cent of total wine production.
Located just north of Porto, Portugal's second largest city, the region's name translates as 'the green coast'. The vines are planted mainly on granite-based soils.
Nearly all the wines produced here are whites which are best drunk when young. The wines from this region are usually bottled without the vintage on the label. The wines are light, low in alcohol with a slight petulance. Whilst the region is famed for its white wines, small amounts of deeply purple-red wine is produced.
