Rioja Alavesa

Similar to the Rioja Alta, but smaller in terms of area under vine, Tempranillo and Graciano are particularly well suited to the prevailing conditions. They provide the fruit and finesse of quality Rioja. The white Viura is grown here and is sometimes added to the red wines of the area for acidity.

Climate and Conditions

It is hot, but locating vineyards at 400-600m above sea level and planting in clay soils that do not reflect or retain the heat help to create the ideal conditions.  Cool nights allied to warm days allows the Tempranillo grape to extend its ripening season and maximise its flavours.
