Nebbiolo

This quintessentially Italian variety is extremely potent in flavour and body. Hailing from the vineyards of Piemonte, the unique conglomeration of soil types makes for this unique variety.

Nebbiolo is late to ripen and so requires a long growing season to achieve its full ripeness. It has a thick skin, thus enabling it to survive cool fogs during vintage. This makes for highly tannic wines.

Most wines made from Nebbiolo are best after about ten years in bottle; the time allows the high tannin and acid levels of the grape to break down.

Key Regions

It is the major grape of Barolo and Barbaresco, in the Piemonte region of Italy. No other regions have planted this grape to significance levels.

Common Characteristics and Ageing

Deep midnight-blue in colour, it offers complex and powerful aromas of tar, roses, black fruit and cedar wood. It has a fullness and develops powerful flavours that are present in the bouquet, the finish being somewhat drying to the mouth in the young wines. After some time, the wine becomes softer and more chocolate, nutmeg, cherries, tea, and prune characters emerge
