St-Véran is something of a middle brother, wedged in between Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon-Villages and often overlooked in favour of both. This is unfortunate, for the wines can rival the former for quality at a price more akin to that paid for the latter. It was once known as Beaujolais blanc, as the appellation overlaps that region, but this practice ended with the creation of the St-Véran AOC in 1971.
All the wines are white and made from Chardonnay. The use of oak is the defining feature and each producer will have his or her favoured style. The best examples will age well and gain in complexity.
