The vineyards of Otago require very careful siting. Sheltering to the east of the Southern Alps, they cling to hillsides where frost is at a minimum and sunshine at a maximum. Autumns that are dry and bright allow for the intense fruit flavours to manifest in the wines. The high production costs in such an environment are naturally passed on to the drinker, but this is matched by the very high quality.
Pinot Noir is the star. It can rival top Burgundies for quality and does so with a distinctive, delicate style of its own. Chardonnay, Gewürtztraminer, Pinot Gris and Riesling all produce wines that are fresh and elegant.
