Mostly cultivated along the Minho river; Alvarinho is drier, fuller-bodied and more aromatic compared to prominent regional whites, Loureiro and Trajadura.
In Spain, high yield is sacrificed for superior quality. Vines tend to be elevated above ground level, reducing damp to produce healthy, high quality grapes. Over-ripening is prevented by leaf canopy above the grape.
