There are four DOs within Aragon, including: Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano. the former three lie within the Zaragoza province and Somontano in Huesca.
Garnacha, Tempranillo, Moristel and Cabernet Sauvignon are the more popular red varietals. Minimally oaked, Garnacha/Tempranillo blends with fruit forward profiles are rewarding. White varieties include Viura, Macabeo, Alcanon and Chardonnay. Fresh, dry whites made from Viura are worth investigating.
Zaragoza's three DOs range from 350m - 800m above sea level and have a continental climate. Scorching summer days & cool nights and cold winters are to be expected. Soils are sandy with limestone bedrock, quick to heat up and good natural drainage. Somontano sits between the Ebro river valley and the Pyranees, creating various mesoclimates within the region but the DO climate is continental. Soils are generally clay overlying sandstone although in the mountainous foothills, the soil is rockier and more loose.
