Originally awarded DOC status in 1970 and promoted to DOCG in 2008. In 2000 however, the sub-zones of Nizza, Tinella & Colli Astiani were officially recognised for their distinctive wine styles.
Barbera dominates the cultivation although other Piedmontese varieties Freisa, Grignolino & Dolcetto are allowed in the blend. Barbera d'Asti wines often exhibit cherry, black fruit with a touch of spice flavours. Rich, tangy and full bodied.
The Continental climate prevails in this region with elevation making a slight difference in mesoclimate and ripening times. Vineyards are located between 90-310m above sea level on clay/limestone soils. The richer clay growth medium is less suited for Nebbiolo but ideal for Barbera.
