Canterbury & Waipara

Canterbury & Waipara

The Canterbury/Waipara area is south of Marlborough and has much in common with its celebrated neighbour. Indeed, its own wine industry sprang into action at around the same time in the1970s and specialises in the same range of grapes. The best wines are considered to come from the Pegasus Bay area.

Some Sauvignon Blanc is planted here, but the elegant and Flavoursome Chadronnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir have acheived great results.

Climate and Conditions

Similar to dry and sunny Marlborough, Canterbury/Waipara is a little cooler and this results in an even longer ripening period. Sauvignon Blanc is not so well suited, but the three other grapes can attain great intensity in the long, mild autumnal conditions.
