Chile's search for terroir began in the 1980s when Chardonnay was first planted here. Due to the cool climate, lack of irrigation water, poor sandy-clay soils and thick morning fog, it was deemed unsuitable for traditional agriculture and relegated to pasture land. However, these conditions are ideal for wine growing.
Over the past 25 years the valley has become well mapped and growers have determined which varieties work best in each area, however, exploration continues!
