Chile's search for terroir began in the 1980s when Chardonnay was first planted here. Due to the cool climate, lack of irrigation water, poor sandy-clay soils and thick morning fog, it was deemed unsuitable for traditional agriculture and relegated to pasture land.  However, these conditions are ideal for wine growing.
