Chassagne-Montrachet shares similarities and has differences with its neighbour, Puligny-Montrachet, to the north. The similarities include a claim on the legendary La Montrachet vineyard, which straddles their border; a sumptuous style of grand cru white wines with an even richer price tag; and a number of premier cru vineyards that produce excellent and affordable wines. The major difference is that Chassagne-Montrachet has a significant output of red wines.
The best white wines are layered, luscious and capable of ageing for up to 20 years. The reds, from Pinot Noir, are less well known but tend to be light, fruity and reasonable value for money.
