West of Lisbon, Colares borders the Atlantic and makes some of Portugal's most historic wine regions. The workhorse grape is called Ramisco and is planted mainly on sandy, cliff-top soils. This is one of the few regions that survived the devastating impact of the phylloxera epidemic in the 1800s. However, some small wineries still survive and continue to produce some excellent wine. Mainly big powerful reds, these wines are rarely exported and are hard to find in the Britain.
