The five Galica DOs include Ribeiro, Riberia Sacra, Monterrei, Valdeorras and Rias Baixas.
White wines dominate these DOs, Albarino, Godello and Loureiro being the most planted. Rias Baixas best examples are crafted from 100% Albarino and often trained on pergolas. This grape produces aromatic and dry wines with peach characteristics. The main red variety is Mencia, medium to light bodied with pomegranate and cherry flavours.
The maritime climate is cool and wet with high sunlight exposure, which explains the lack of red grape varieties grown in the region. The soils vary from granite, slate and alluvial deposits.
