Lower Austria (Niederosterreich)

Lower Austria (Niederosterreich)

The Niederösterreich is serious wine country with a greater area under vine, over 33,000ha, than the Champagne region of France and twice as much as New Zealand. It is divided into eight districts, of which the Wachau, Kremstal and Kamptal are the most important when it comes to quality.

This can be excellent, especially regarding the white wines, and this region of Austria is a gem that is usually overlooked when we turn to Europe for a bottle. If it can be kept from the glasses of the locals, it is time for more Niederösterreich wine to make its way over to this country.

Styles of Wines

The region is famous for its rich Rieslings, but Grüner Veltliner is an indigenous Austrian vine that makes up most of the plantings. It is a versatile grape and can be light or powerful depending on where it is grown.  Red wines are in the minority, but the Carnuntum district is enjoying success.

Key Vines

Grüner Veltliner is the principle vine of the region, and Riesling the most celebrated, but Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) also achieves admirable results. Chardonnay has a presence.

Zweigelt and Blauburgunder (Pinot Noir) are significant reds, as are Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah in the Carnuntum district.

Climate and Conditions

As with all of Austria's wine-producing regions, the Niederösterreich is in the east of the country where the climate is mild and conducive to the ripening of grapes. It is also acknowledged by many as one of the most beautiful wine regions in the world. Soil type varies throughout this large area and different districts suit different vines.
