Montagny

Montagny, the most southerly of the Côte Chalonnaise wine villages, has an intriguing quirk that is unique to this appellation. Every single one of its wines, and they are all white, only qualifies for premier cru status if it can achieve 11.5% alcohol. This has not necessarily been a boon because it has allowed decidedly ordinary examples to rub shoulders with the far better wines that are out there. To avoid coming unstuck the producer's name will be of key importance.
