Farther north than the other major wine-producing regions of South Africa, the Olifants River region has made little impact on the export market. It produces, in actual fact, more wine than Stellenbosch but most is destined for distillation and local consumption. Hot summers and low rainfall require careful management of the vines, but the soil is rich and certain white wines have achieved encouraging results. Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from here may yet make their mark on the world.
