Ontario produces the vast majority of Canadian wine and the Niagara Peninsula is its heartland. As in British Columbia, vineyards are often sited near lakes to make use of the heat that these bodies of water store and release in a climate otherwise too cold for successful viniculture.

Indeed, cool-climate techniques pioneered in Ontario have been adopted by many English winemakers. The VQA system of quality regulation was established here in 1988 and is amongst the finest and most trustworthy in the world.

Vines and Styles

Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürtztraminer and Riesling are the principal white grapes grown, the last of these being used in the famous Icewines.  Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Baco Noir and Gamay can all produce fine reds.
