A small appellation to the west of the famous Corton hill, Pernand-Vergelesses has some excellent premier cru vineyards producing both white and red wines. Burgundy's second white grape, the Aligoté, is grown here and, rather more grandly, a section of the famous grand cru Corton-Charlemagne vineyard is found within its borders.
Both the red and the white wines, from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay respectively, are generally lighter in style than those found elsewhere on the Côte d'Or. The whites made from Aligoté lack the complexity of the two noble grapes but have a pleasant and refreshing character of their own.
