History
Viticulture began here about 6,000 years ago and despite being overrun by the Ottomans, wine growing has been consistant throughout the vines introduction. Communism brought a period of expansion, where focus on volume and frost resistance rode higher than quality. Since the fall of Communism however and increased privatisation/foreign investment in the 1990's, quality is now paramount.
Climate and Conditions
Mountains dominate this continental climate, the Carpathians and Transylvanian Alps running north-south and east-west respectively. Summers are hot and dry compared to cold/wet winters with snow commonplace. Easterly winds can be bitter and wineries often use treelines as wind-breaks. Valley floor vineyards are often prone to frost, although vine training can alleviate this. Powdery & Downy mildews are a persistant problem, site choice will have a deciding factor on the scale of the threat.
The Wines of Today
Fateasca Alba and Regala are the two most planted white varieties, plus Welschriesling and Sauvignon Blanc for whites. The Fateasca's are capable of hedonism: aromatic and morish. Fateasca Neagra, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noirs account for many of the red varieties cultivated. Sweets wines are also well produced here, notably Murfatlar.
