Rueda is a sub region of Castilla y Leon, located North west of Madrid and became a DO in 1980.
Vines and Styles
Whites are the most well known, Verdejo, Sauvignon Blanc, Viura and Palimino Fino. Rueda Blanco cannot contain less than 50% Verdejo, aromatic, dry and elegant it can be showstopping. Red wines, while not as well known have good potential. Plantings include: Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Garnacha.
Climate and Conditions
A distinctly continental climate with hot summers and cold, harsh winters. During the summer, the arid heat of the day is tempered by cool nights, allowing the vines and grapes relax allowing them to retain critical acidity. The region's soils are iron and limestone rich, with poor nutrients and good drainage it's ideal for grape cultivation. Vineyards closest to the Duero are the most sought after.
