Carignan

France's most planted grape variety since the mid-1960s is now in decline as a casualty of the European Union's vine-pull scheme. The vine still remains the predominant variety in the south of France - particularly in Fitou, where it still accounts for around 65% of the wine produced. In the New World, especially South America, it is gaining ground with the help of  innovative viticultural techiniques, technology and climate. This is a rustic and simplistic variety which makes for approachable wine.
