Five Facts You Didn't Know About Riesling

1. The best German Riesling is grown on south facing steep, rocky soils, ideally on the banks of one of the great German rivers such as the Rhine or the Nahe.

2. Whilst Riesling requires a lot of sunshine to ripen to its optimum level, it also needs fairly cool temperatures. This enables the flavour enzymes in the grape to fully develop and mature; highly important for making delicious Riesling.

3. The soil plays a massive part in the cultivation of Riesling as it nourishes the roots, and thus the vines, with water and nutrients. Furthermore, the soil influences heat conservation and with it, the development of the vine and the ripening of the grapes.

4. Riesling is one of the longest lived wines. The low PH and (sometimes) high sugar levels also increase the longevity of this wine. In Bremen, Germany they have Rieslings dating back to 1653! Now that is an old wine!

5. It is thanks to this great diversity of soil, aspect, temperature and producer preference  that  there is no homogenised style of German wine, but rather, a wide range of quite distinctive wines. It is for this reason that Riesling is the favoured white wine of choice across the wine trade.
