Douro

The Douro is home to Port, the world's most famous fortified wine, and is Portugal's most developed region. It has had its own DOC since 1979, though the region is still dominated by the Port trade.

The vineyards nestle in the steep hillsides of the Douro Valley. Here the mainly schist soils are planted with old vines, some over 100 years old. These vines are low-yielding but produce wines with intense fruit.
