Almansa Revisted

I am a huge fan of this wine for so many reasons, it is that great combination of being from a region that is often overlooked, and made from a grape variety not often associated with the country of origin - more than this, it is absolutely delicious! Situated about 60 miles from Valencia, Almansa enjoys the cold winters and warm summers that dictate the flavour of the wine with rich and warm flavours filling the palate.

Bodegas Piqueras, who make the Valcanto Syrah in this month's selection, operate out of a state-of-the-art winery built in 2002 which I have had the pleasure of visiting (as you can see from the picture). Brothers Juan Pablo and Angle Bonete oversaw a move from the previous site as they continue to push the Bodega forward, building on the great reputation that had been established by their Father, after he founded the company in 1915. They grow a range of different varietals bit the Syrah has always been my favourite, with its deep flavour I think they have managed to get something a little bit different out of this grape that is grown so widely and I always find that refreshing and interesting.
