The Caprichos Chardonnay Macabeo I have selected for this month's selection is from Aragon in Northern Spain, and comes under the DO Cariñena. This is an area that enjoyed huge growth during the 1990s, and Bodegas Esteban Martin where this wine is made, highlights this as the period when they began moving their production towards a more modern approach in the hope of creating a more commercially successful wine.

Naturally this focused upon adapting the traditional grape variates and flavours to suit the UK market and, as such, the expansion bore witness to the introduction of noble grape varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, the latter of which makes up the majority of this blend. It is important to note that this did not mean simply recreating the styles form other countries that were popular in the UK, and what actually emerged was a new style of Spanish white that was fresh and fruity. The inclusion of Macabeo in this blend is a nod to the indigenous varietals that have not disappeared but have simply been enhanced by modernity, creating something versatile yet quirky.
