Chianti is one of those wines that has to be tasted before any assumptions can be made about the flavours. The quality and style can vary massively from producer to producer, sometimes the wines are full and rich and sometimes thin and insipid.
Duca di Sesseta is a producer we've been working with for some time, I know we've included some of their lines in previous cases, so I was confident they would come up with goods. I wasn't disappointed this medium bodied red has good cherry fruit flavour and firm structure that will support rich flavours and gravies, another wine perfect for Christmas.
It was Mary who first bought the Grillo to my attention, and after tasting it I agreed that it was just what the Weavers Italian range was missing. Grillo is the name of the grape, but it is grown almost solely in Sicily meaning it offers a unique regional charterer as well as varietal expression.
Renowned for its full body and fruity character it survives the hot climate because of the vineyards' close proximity the sea and the cool maritime breezes that keep the temperature in check. I think this is a really unique wine that honours the Wine Club's remit to introduce new and exciting things as much as possible.
