Magic from Montagny

Alain Roy, pictured here with a younger me, is one of the most lively and passionate wine-makers I have met. It's a shame I cannot speak French because I have to rely on a translator and I am afraid to say his passion does not come across as well in translation.

Alain could be called Mr Chardonnay because for the past 30 years that is the only grape he has worked with and without a doubt he has one of the most prestigious estates in the appellation of Montagny.

In a nutshell, Alain makes this one wine and it is as lively as his personality.  If you could ever taste a personality, then this wine is Alain's. He chooses to blend different parcels of his Premier Cru wines from the Montagny appellation to achieve the white flower aromas and lively rounded finish of the Château de la Saule. The resulting wine rivals the more famous appellations of the Burgundy region and is simply a stunning drink.

  1. Montagny Premier Cru, Château de la Saule

Montagny Premier Cru, Chateau de la Saule, 2014 75cl

Green gold colour which develops to pale gold tints. The nose shows aromas of white flowers, as well as dried fruits (apricots). Generally speaking, Montagny is always lively, fresh, fruity, and with a good minerality whilst at the same time being soft and round, it has a good length.
