Rueda is located in central, north-west Spain just over 40 miles from Valladolid. Verdejo is regarded as the king of all vines in this region, yet these days small plantings of Sauvignon Blanc are appearing. Lying close to the river Duero, the vineyards lie on sandy, gravel soils which have excellent drainage. The region boasts long hot summers, perfect growing conditions for the grapes to achieve optimum ripeness. The Green Fish selected for this case reflects the wines from this region and captures flavours that are reminiscent of mountain herbs and exhibit fruity notes with a slight sensation of sweetnesss.
The Red Boar label which accompanies the Green Fish is made from 100% Bobal, another one of Spain's indigenous grapes which is in fact one of the top 5 most widely planted varieties in the country. Often used, shall we say at the bulk end of the market, the grape is often never disclosed on the label. A growers dream, the vine is able to suite most climates it is planted in and is resilient to both disease and extreme weather conditions.
As you will see in this month's selection, the Red Boar is rich in colour and has considerable weight on the palate and I hope that you enjoy one of Spain's unsung grape heroes.
