Rolf and Christa's parents emigrated to Australia after the Second World War, and like so many immigrants they subsidised their passage by working as fruit pickers when they arrived in Australia. They found themselves picking grapes in the Barossa Valley and fell in love with the old vine Shiraz, Mataro and Grenache grapes and the wines they could produce. The winery they started is now in their childrens' capable hands, with Christa's whites and Rolf's reds achieving international acclaim and recognition.
I opted for this blend because I thought it showcased what the Barossa is all about. The Shiraz grapes used are from the very special Hanisch vines that produce grapes with the intensity of flavour and characteristics of pepper and spice. The Grenache comes from the Western Ridge, the most westerly vineyard in the Barossa, and are picked from old vines renowned for their richness. The old dry grown Mataro (also known as Mouvedre), with over a centuries worth of pedigree, brings the tannin, critical for the balance of the wine.
