It struck me that this was a really good example of Argentinean Wine-Makers reviving grape varieties and giving them a new lease of life. Much like Malbec, Petit Verdot is one of those varietals that appears as a bit part player in Bordeaux blends. It's exciting to see it being used as a single varietal, not least because of the interesting flavours and textures the wine has, it's a really interesting addition to Weavers range.
Don Baltazar is produced by Casa Montes in the Tulum Valley, on the banks of the San Juan River. The winery is 700 meters above sea level, one of the highest sites in the San Juan region, this provides a cooler climate that ensures superb growing conditions in the vineyards. Built in 1992, it's very much the new boy, this should come as no surprise to anyone who's seen the winery's state of the art equipment and modern viticultural techniques.
