Bodegas y Vinedos Tobelos only recently arrived on the scene in 1999 but lies in the very heart of the best Tempranillo vineyards of the region and neighbours the illustrious bodegas of Muga, Cune and Rioja Alta. This crianza style Rioja is a firm favourite of mine and just seems to keep on getting better and better. The secret behind the wines success is that it is aged in 3 different types of oak for a minimum of 12 months and it is this which gives it its phenomenal depth and complexity.

The Tobelos project came to fruition through the ambition of one man, Ricardo Reinoso. The winery was designed in a modern and minimalist style and is set into the hillside that runs down to the Río Ebro, immersing itself into the terrain but ont conforming to the classic style of a winery. The bodega lies on the boundary of the municipality of Haro and is separated only by a pathway. It is perched on the top of a steep slope with breathtaking views of the vineyards and the River Ebro. It is the first bodega you arrive at on entering the denominación of Rioja from the north. The winery itself was not completed until 2003 so the 2002 was the first vintage to be vinified there. Inside the winery there are a total of 975 oak barrels which come from North America, France, and Central Europe and all of these are used to create the flagship crianza.
