It's in the Den

It's been a while since we've looked at the Painted Wolf wines and having enjoyed them again recently I thought it was a great opportunity to look at the Pintoage grape again. South Africa's archetypal grape can be devisive - a Marmite wine if you like - because of the earthy nature of the wines it can produce. One of the reasons I like The Den Pinotage from Painted Wolf is that it is very much a fruit driven style, and seems to win over even the most ardent Pinotage haters, of which my sister Mary is one!

The Painted Wolf Story

Founded by Jeremy (pictured) and Emma Borg, and drawing inspiration from the African Wild Dog, the Painted Wolf ‘pack’ is a community of talented individuals who bring the best available grapes, artistic and technical skills to Painted Wolf Wines. The grapes are sourced from the pack members vineyards, which are low yielding, mostly unirrigated and farmed organically or with minimal non organic inputs. The “Painted Wolf” (Lycaon Pictus), also known as the African Wild Dog or Painted Dog, is one of Africa’s most fascinating and highly endangered mammals. They are the inspiration of the wines and Jeremy and Emma support the conservation of this intriguing and beautiful animal with a contribution from every bottle of wine sold.

  1. The Den Pinotage, Coastal Region

Den Pinotage, Coastal Region, 2014 75cl

A very fruity expression of South Africa's most famous black grape. Lots of berry fruit, both red and black, are supported by just a hint of the earthy tannin typical of this style. There is some spice and toast in a finish that is pleasingly deep.
