The 2012 Hallmark Grenache is taken from a small plot of extremely low yielding old vines. The older a vine gets the less fruit it produces, but the grapes which do emerge are far more concentrated and rich in flavour and aroma. Grenache is one of the grape varieties which benefits from being grown on mature vines as it has a great ability to show amazing secondary characteristics of smoke and leather whilst maintaining an uplifting perfumed aroma.
Whilst usually known for its full bodied Shiraz and richly oaked Chardonnays, the Mclaren Vale is beginning to produce wines from unexpected varieties but of equal repute. Pinot Gris is one of the four noble German white varieties and when conditions are just right produces wines with a deliciously honeyed texture which perfectly compliment luscious stone fruit in an off dry style. Thankfully this was the case for the 2015 vintage as a cool early autumn provided ideal conditions at harvest, allowing the grapes to express the optimum amount of fruit character and florality whilst maintaining exceptional balance.
