The Far Reaches Of Rioja

I selected this wine partly because it is a new addition to our range that I thought you'd like to try, but also because it offers something a bit different when compared with the other wines produced in this region. Rioja Salagon is made by Finca La Emperatriz at their vineyards in the North West of Rioja, just at the edge of the DOC limits. It is this geographical location that gives the wine produced here a unique edge for the region, relating to both the climate and the soil.

570 metres above the Sea

The first thing of note here is that because the vineyards are situated 570m above sea level, the climate is a little bit cooler than in other parts of Rioja. In wine-speak, they enjoy a more continental climate rather then Mediterranean which sets it apart. the effect this has on the wine relates to purity and elegance, over ripe grapes can sometimes create jammy wines where the delicate nuances of the variety are lost, this is much more easily avoided in a cooler climate.

Soils are the Key

This is going to sound strange, but please hear me out - another benefit of the vineyard location is the poor quality of the soil. The gravelly soil, which lacks nutrients and minerals, forces the vine to put all of it's energy into producing fruit. If you'll forgive a little bit of 'cod-botany', the vine thinks it is going to die so concentrates all its energy to reproduction i.e. the grape.

I think you'll agree that this is a Rioja that not only offers high quality, it also has a little bit something different about it.

  1. Salagón Crianza, Rioja Alta

Salagón Crianza, Rioja Alta, 2010 75cl

The nose is full of red berries with very soft spice hinted at. The palate is of medium weight and brings vibrant fruit character all supported by vanilla and touches of more peppery spice. The finish is light but persistent with plenty more vanilla character.
