Little Beauty: Part Two

You may remember that in the last Wine Club case we featured a couple of wines from one of our favourite wineries, Little Beauty. such is the stunning scope, variety, and quality of the wines that they manage to produce on a single small estate that we have decided to show you yet another of their fantastically unique wines.

Gewurztraminer

The North Eastern tip of New Zealand's South Island is hardly the spiritual home of this particular grape variety (that would be the French department of Alsace which also borders with Germany and Switzerland) but with the right vineyard, a skillful winemaker, and a lot of patience great things can be achieved.

This variety can be made in a number of styles from dry to sticky sweet, full bodied and spicy to light and floral, and as is the case with this wine, can withstand a significant amount of bottle ageing.

This 2011 is exotic and intriguing; think middle-eastern spices (star anise, clove, cinnamon), lychee and rose petals. Wonderful when paired with dishes featuring chilli and coriander and equally good with creamy cheeses or pâté.

  1. Little Beauty Gewürztraminer, Marlborough

Little Beauty Gewürztraminer, Marlborough, 2011 75cl

Intensely aromatic and pleasingly luscious yet unlike any Gewurtztraminer I can think of with the classic floral notes mostly becoming apparent on the long, complex finish. An unusual and difficult variety to produce but totally worth the effort.
