The Secrets of the Galets

The Secrets of the Galets

The wine producing region of Chateauneuf-du-Pape is remarkable for a number of reasons. The first of these is that it was the first ever legally recognised wine appellation in the world when the commune gained protected status in 1933. The second thing that sets this stunning appellation apart from its peers is the presence of large stones known as Galets in the vineyards. These almost entirely cover the growing area and have a marked effect upon the style of wine which is produced. This is down to the fact that the in the hot summer days of the Southern Rhone Valley these Galets get so hot that they retain their heat throughout the night which provides the vines with optimal growing conditions for a more sustained period.

The name of this wine is a nod to the importance of the Galets and is an excellent example of the big, rich, and superbly balanced wines from this prestigious Southern Rhone region. The nose is full of deep, dark fruit as well as savoury, gamey notes which continue onto the palate where they are joined by smoke, leather and forest floor.
