The distinctive character of Mouchão wines derives from three principal characteristics: 1. the Alicante Bouschet grape 2. the unique terroir 3. the adherence to traditional winemaking methods. Mouchão grapes are also hand-picked and foot trodden in marble cement lining lagares; the subsequent wine is then aged in five thousand litre vats. It is also worth noting that Mouchão wines are renowned for their longevity. These wines mature slowly in delightfully subtle ways, making them a great addition to any wine cellar.
The white wines of the Mouchao estate are made up of a complex blend of indigenous Portuguese grape varieties, which provide the wine with its intensely refreshing citrus notes of lemon and grapefruit. Through skillful wine making they have also managed to tease out a certain mineral quality which adds complexity and develops until the very end of the finish. This is a superb wine for summer and is intended to be consumed whilst young.
The vast majority of plantings in the Mouchao vineyards centre around the Alicante Bouschet grape variety, widely considered a noble variety on the Iberian Peninsula. Dark ruby in colour with notes of plum jam, spice, dark chocolate and a few elegant hints of the wood where it was aged. Overall, the wine shows structure, freshness and a long, persistent finish.
