On the rolling hills between the cities of Florence and Siena lie some of the best known vineyards on Earth. The famous red wines of Chianti are comprised almost exclusively from the Sangiovese grape variety. At their worst Chianti wines can be under ripe, astringent, and thin, but when the grapes are given time to properly ripen and are handled skillfully the wines are structured, concentrated, complex and have superb ageing potential.
